They were produced in Guelph, Ontario, Canada by Don J Smith, the same man who imported the first Stihl's into Vancouver, Canada from the mid to late nineteen thirties.

He went on the clone that saw and then sold out to Reed Prentice who sold out to local business men who formed IEL.

In the mean time DJ Smith moved to Guelph, Ontario and in 1946 started producing the model HJ (his son's initials) two man Hornet.

In 1948 he updated it to the model D two man Hornet.

In 1950 he sold out to Mall and so the Mall name appears on later models.

I finally have my grandfathers HJ. it is serial # 1158A. the flywheel is the "built up" type and it would have had the earliest type aircleaner, vertical rectangular type. Also I now can add another level to the ongoing Hornet puzzle

Aparently, the earliest HJ models had three redesigns of the connecting rod. For clarity here I'll define "early" to mean HJ's with the built up flywheel and the above mentioned aircleaner. I have three of these saws now; and, all are apart.
The earliest, serial
#1158A has a connecting rod with a bronze bushing in the small end, an oil hole and roller big end bearing

Saw number
#1962 is also "early" type, and has a cartridge type crowded roller small end, no oil hole, and roller big end.

Saw number
#1968 "early" type, cartridge type crowded roller small end with a oil hole, and roller big end.

So it seems that there were variations in the internal parts as well.

Hornet not cast in housing, but has a tag on the gearbox- manual clutch, 36" two man bar,  rectangular air filter.

Numbers cast on fan housing-B-1003 and stamped at base of top housing-
#3098.

Serial No 5362
Engine Serial No 5362
Fuel tank no 5362
Gearbox no 5378
Notice this fuel tank has tabs to rest the indexing lever on as a anti rattle device
and the round style of airfilter
Note the saw on the left has the two Aluminium tabs to locate the indexing lever
Notice the airfilter assy
Hornet "D" has exhaust mounted faceing forward as per #9092
# 5362 has exhaust facing to the left
directly above the magneto
There appears to be 3 different fuel/oil tanks fitted to the HJ.

1st type smooth without the cast in Hornet logo has Hornet logo rivited onto magneto guard.

2nd type smooth with raised cast  Hornet Logo

3rd type has casting different on sides and has nameplate tag on tank and or has Hornet logo Hornet image rivited to side of tank
.
Two types of flywheels are noticed fitted one that is entirely within the fan housing and the other protrudes outside the fan housing
Pic to left shows the location of the engine serial number theres also the same number on the gearbox and fuel tank which should indicate a matched number set no doubt in service the gearbox and fuel tank could have been swapped out as needed.
Notice the fuel caps on the early Hornets are cocked off centre whereas the 2nd type fuel cap sits flat
3843
The saw above and too its right has an easier set of rear handles to remove than the steel strap braced ones and i feel the two extra hand grips are an owner add on.

The fuel tank of the saw above seems to be a later model tank fitted to an earlier power head.
